The Médanos de Coro are one of the most important natural representations of the Venezuelan landscape. These are sand formations characteristic of the relief of Falcon State, being part of the Lara-Falcon system for its dunes that exceed 8 meters above sea level. The Médanos de Coro were declared a national park on February 6, 1974 and cover an area of more than 80,866 hectares. This national park preserves the closest protected area to the Gulf of Venezuela. It also preserves a very vulnerable coastal desert and is the most important desert in Venezuela. Its sandy accumulations are shifting due to the action of the trade winds blowing from east to west. Its most important area is circumscribed around the isthmus, on the road to the Paraguaná Peninsula on the north side of the city of Santa Ana de Coro.
