Morrocoy National Park is located on the easternmost coast of Falcón State and in the northwestern Gulf of Triste, specifically on Venezuela's west-central coast, near the towns of Boca de Aroa, Tucacas, Sanare, Chichiriviche, Flamenco and Tocuyo de la Costa. It was declared a national park on May 26, 1974 and consists of 32,090 ha. The park covers both terrestrial and aquatic areas of the Golfo Triste. It is a protected island and marine reserve on Venezuela's Caribbean coast. It is known for its mangroves, beaches and famous keys. In its clear waters you can observe coral reefs, sea turtles and dolphins. The swamps of the Cuare Wildlife Refuge are home to a wide variety of birds, such as red herons and flamingos.
